Melshanti — Chief Officiating Priest

Hon. Brahmasree Oonvanpallimana Ajith Namboothiri

The Melshanti of Sree Ayyappa Temple — the chief officiating priest in the Parashurama Kshetra tradition. Leads the daily worship and the central rituals of the Naveekarana Kalasam under the guidance of the Tantri.

Chief Officiating Priest

In the Parashurama Kshetra tradition, the Melshanti is the chief priest who carries the temple’s daily worship — the morning Nirmalya, the Abhishekams, the Deeparadhana, and the closing of the nada at the end of each day. Where the Tantri establishes the ritual structure of the temple, the Melshanti sustains it.

Hon. Brahmasree Oonvanpallimana Ajith Namboothiri holds this role at Sree Ayyappa Temple, Yeshwanthpur — leading the daily pooja routines and the central rituals of the Kshetra Nirmana Yagna.

Role in the Naveekarana Kalasam

During the 17-day Naveekarana Kalasam and Utsava, the Melshanti officiates alongside the Tantri at the most central rituals:

  • The opening Ganapathi Homam and Acharyavaranam
  • The daily Kalasa poojas through the 11 days
  • The Jeevakalasabhishekam on Pratishta morning, 31 May 2026
  • The Sreebhootabali processions of the Utsava
  • The closing Aarattu on 8 June 2026

Lineage and authority

The Melshanti’s family lineage — Oonvanpallimana — belongs to the venerated Namboothiri Brahmin households of the Parashurama Kshetra tradition. His authority to officiate at this temple is established through both his family lineage and his formal training in the Tantric and Vedic disciplines required of a Melshanti.

“Through the Melshanti’s continuous Seva, the deity remains awake.”
