Manjal Abhishekam
Turmeric abhishekam for Bhagavati / Naga deities
Manjal Abhishekam (ಅರಿಶಿನ ಅಭಿಷೇಕ | हल्दी अभिषेक | മഞ്ഞൾ അഭിഷേകം — 'turmeric abishekam') is the sacred turmeric-paste anointing of the deity, traditionally performed for Bhagavati and the Nagas. The cooling, healing properties of turmeric are offered to the deity with chants — a particularly auspicious abhishekam on Ayilyam day.
Manjal Abhishekam is the ceremonial anointing of the deity with fresh turmeric paste, performed at our temple on Ayilyam (Ashlesha) day as part of the monthly Ayilyam observance.
The offering
Fresh turmeric is ground into a paste with water + a touch of sandalwood, then poured over the Naga / Bhagavati vigraha with mantras. The cooling, healing, and purifying properties of turmeric — recognized across Hindu tradition for both ritual and Ayurvedic significance — are offered to the deity on behalf of the devotee.
Significance
In the Naga and Bhagavati traditions, turmeric carries the qualities of purification, healing, and prosperity. Performed on Ayilyam day, the Manjal Abhishekam is particularly sought by:
- Devotees praying for the healing of family illness
- Those completing remedies for skin conditions or chronic ailments traditionally attributed to Sarpa Dosha
- Couples seeking blessings before childbirth
- Anyone with strong Naga or Bhagavati personal practice
Combined with other Ayilyam offerings
